Scientists have been able to cool down gases to temperatures of about a hundred billionths of a degree. 00:00:10
How do they do that? 00:00:16
Atoms move faster than hotter gases, so to cool a gas, you have to make the atoms move slower. 00:00:17
To do this, scientists shoot laser beams off the atoms. 00:00:23
Interesting, but why? 00:00:26
What they did was produce a new state of matter called Bose-Einstein. 00:00:28
Is this new matter different from the three states of matter that we now know about? 00:00:32

Yes, and the technology that created this new matter has improved clocks that use atoms to tell time. 00:00:39
