UNICEF Representative in Sudan Ted Chaiban discusses his recent visit to for the displaced in Darfur. UNICEF correspondent Amy Bennett reports.
UNICEF REPRESENTATIVE FOR SUDAN TED CHAIBAN RECENTLY RETURNED FROM DARFUR AND SPOKE ABOUT
00:00:00
THE REALITIES IN THE CAMPS FOR THE DISPLACED.
00:00:12
In the last couple of months, we have continued to see some fighting in Darfur and some displacement
00:00:15
in Darfur.
00:00:20
And UNICEF and the NGOs and the non-governmental organizations and the UN have continued to
00:00:22
hold the line, but it's really becoming difficult.
00:00:29
There's some camps, for example, that have taken in the latest displaced and they're
00:00:34
filled to capacity and so we need to think of new sites to go to and places where displacements,
00:00:37
if it is to occur, can be welcomed.
00:00:45
Our working conditions are very difficult.
00:00:48
We've had a lot of vehicles looted, we've had staff attacked, we've even lost some colleagues,
00:00:50
have died, and it's a very tenuous situation.
00:00:56
The only solution really is a political process that gets Darfur back on track.
00:01:01
Even in the midst of a conflict like Darfur, you find opportunities and you find hope.
00:01:08
For example, children completing their school year and specifically their eighth grade,
00:01:12
which is the last year of primary education, the fact that we've been able to establish
00:01:18
these services and work with these children, even in IDP camps, and ensure that they're
00:01:22
able to continue an activity which is normal for children studying and give them the opportunity
00:01:26
to go into secondary school, I think is something that's very positive.
00:01:32
Also when we traveled in December to Jabal Mara, the number of women that came to us
00:01:39
and on the one hand appreciated what we had done, on the other hand wanted us to continue
00:01:43
to fly into these areas that are rebel-held, that are quite difficult to access, and to
00:01:50
continue to provide services like immunization, for example.
00:01:55
The fact that they understood that immunization was essential and that they wanted the service
00:01:58
and were willing to do their part in order to make sure the service continued, I think
00:02:02
again made me feel like there are opportunities and there's a lot that can be done even in
00:02:06
the midst of a difficult situation and a conflict situation.
00:02:11
For children, as I said, in some ways we're trying to turn a tragedy into an opportunity.
00:02:14
For the millions of displaced, the opportunity to go to school is vital. Along with aid and
00:02:22
immunization, UNICEF is hoping to ensure that this generation, despite growing up in the
00:02:27
midst of conflict, is not forgotten.
