Twenty years ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. 00:00:00
It was tough. 00:00:08
My case is quite common. 00:00:13
I had a very high PSA of 26 and a positive rectal ultrasonography. 00:00:15
The risk of cancer was very clear. 00:00:24
During the surgery, they couldn't confirm this, so it took another five years of biopsy. 00:00:29
I've had several biopsies over the last 20 years which have proved that indeed I have 00:00:37
cancer but that I don't need treatment. 00:00:44
You know it takes 15 years to die from prostate cancer. 00:00:54
After 15 years, I was very careful and my colleagues convinced me to have radiotherapy. 00:01:00
Personally, I still think it was the wrong decision. 00:01:10
I had to endure the side effects of radiotherapy. 00:01:17
Of course, the doctor feels he has to heal you and he believes that all cancers need 00:01:21
to be destroyed. 00:01:29
Another thing we know is that there's an over-diagnosis level of about 30%, so we find 00:01:34
cancers that don't need treatment but they still get over-treatment in 30% of cases. 00:01:43
That's a major issue, over-diagnosis and over-treatment. 00:01:49
A diagnosis of cancer is never nice. 00:01:56
For most people, it means they're going to die. 00:02:01
That's the big problem, the lack of knowledge. 00:02:07
What you imagine is always worse than the reality. 00:02:14
The patient has these ideas about what's going to happen to him. 00:02:18
But when he's well-informed, he knows he can live a normal life. 00:02:24
Here in the oncological center, there are eight patient groups. 00:02:33
We want to help those people on every level by improving their knowledge, through good 00:02:41
communication and by supporting them with their problems. 00:02:54
All I know is that I, like the other three million men in Europe, will probably not die 00:03:02
of prostate cancer, but that I'll feel the effects of it when I'm older. 00:03:12
At a certain stage, you say, it's like my age, my rheumatism, my hair loss, my feet. 00:03:21
You continue your life, but you don't want to spend it in the urologist's or the doctor's office. 00:03:32
Our only wish is, first treat the person, then fight the cancer. 00:03:39
