You are watching UNICEF Television. 00:00:00
On the outskirts of Banda Aceh, midwife Radliana is making a house call. 00:00:05
She has come to check up on 30-year-old Asri, who is eight months pregnant. 00:00:11
This will be Asri's second child. 00:00:16
She has little money for health care and is too far along in her pregnancy to travel to 00:00:19
a clinic. 00:00:23
Midwives like Radliana have traditionally served as primary caregivers for families 00:00:25
in Indonesia, but with decades of unrest, followed by the 2004 tsunami, proper medical 00:00:29
resources in Aceh have been scarce. 00:00:35
A new arrival to Tanjong village is changing that. 00:00:40
A gleaming new health center built by UNICEF. 00:00:43
This is among the first of some 227 health centers UNICEF is building across Aceh and 00:00:48
Nius Island. 00:00:53
They are designed to combine maternity services with essential care, including giving immunizations, 00:00:55
boosting nutrition, and promoting healthy behavior. 00:01:01
Most centers will also offer learning activities for preschool-aged children. 00:01:05
Radliana says the new center gives her more capacity to treat her patients, and more living 00:01:10
space. 00:01:16
She and her family live in one half of the building, separated from the examination rooms. 00:01:17
The response from the community has been very good, she says. 00:01:24
They really like the building, and it offers more convenience and privacy for them to come 00:01:27
back and check their health. 00:01:31
Before, many were not comfortable coming to my house because there was only one room, 00:01:33
and my family was there. 00:01:37
Setia Hanum is one of seven pregnant women counting on Radliana's care. 00:01:40
She is worried about her unborn baby. 00:01:45
Her first pregnancy ran into complications and required a cesarean section during birth. 00:01:47
She hopes to avoid surgery a second time. 00:01:53
Setia is comforted knowing there's an improved health center in case of trouble. 00:01:56
Several years ago, the midwife had to go from door to door, she says, but now the service 00:02:02
is better. 00:02:06
The new midwife is more experienced in dealing with patients, and we can get more medicine 00:02:07
and more equipment. 00:02:12
And a little more peace of mind for new mothers in Aceh. 00:02:15
In Tanjong Village, Indonesia, this is Steve Nettleton reporting for UNICEF Television. 00:02:20
