Are creating more pedestrian areas and improving public transport 00:00:00
co-efficient alternatives to private cars used in urban centres? 00:00:11
I'm here to prove that this is not an efficient idea. 00:00:15
In this example, you can see all the cars around a pedestrian area 00:00:19
which not only causes pollution around the cities, 00:00:22
but also horrible traffic. 00:00:27
Problems are not only around the pedestrian area, as you can see here, you can also may occur crowding in the city. 00:00:29
Public transport is not always efficient, and there are more points to discuss. 00:00:39
I'll leave you here if you want to sit. 00:00:43
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this debate. Hi, I'm Blanca. 00:00:45
Today I'm going to introduce some of the reasons why creating more pedestrian areas aren't an efficient alternative to private cars in urban centres. 00:00:49
Firstly, Sofia is going to give the first rebuttal, secondly, Cristina is going to give the second rebuttal, and last but not least, Rocio is going to deliver the conclusions. 00:00:58
So, for our first argument, we are going to deal with how touristifications can worsen the functionality of public transport and the environment of the city. 00:01:06
Besides, for our second point, it's about the creation of pedestrian areas and vending cars in city centres. 00:01:18
It can be a waste of time or even a health issue that doesn't compensate for the reduction of pollution. 00:01:24
And finally, for our third point, it's about how public transport is not accessible for everyone. 00:01:32
And it isn't a good effective alternative. 00:01:39
So, for our first argument about touristification, as all pedestrian areas attract tourism, this causes a mass tourism. 00:01:42
This can become an overflowing river that causes negative impacts on the local environment. 00:01:52
For example, exodus of the local population, also a lot of noise, also the congestion of public services, and last but not least, the increase of crime rates in public transport. 00:01:58
So, besides, in our second point about pollution, imagine that this is a pedestrian zone and you live here and you have an emergency and you have to go to the hospital that is here. 00:02:09
So you have to surround all the pedestrian area and it's a waste of time if it is an emergency, it's not an effective idea and also you are not going to prevent the pollution in the surrounding areas, only in the pedestrian area. 00:02:23
And last but not least, we are going to talk about some of the disadvantages of public transport. 00:02:39
Disabled people experience many difficult situations due to the issues in lifts and lack of accessibility. 00:02:46
Furthermore, we are also going to mention the oversubscription and saturation of public transport in peak hours. 00:02:55
So thank you for listening and good morning. 00:03:01
