UNICEF supplies reach West Sumatra quake survivors

UNICEF is sending in emergency supplies to the Indonesian province of West Sumatra,

where two major earthquakes shook the region, killing dozens of people

and injuring nearly a thousand more.

Thousands of homes, schools, and businesses were destroyed

when the 6.3 tremor struck the area last week.

Aftershocks are still being felt, and many residents are choosing to camp out

amid fear of another major jolt.

UNICEF is helping by providing the victims with basic necessities,

like hygiene kits, cooking sets, jerry cans, and water bladders

that provide some 5,000 liters of clean water.

UNICEF is now on an emergency response,

and we focus on the children and the mother.

Local officials say hundreds of schools have been damaged,

and some are beyond repair.

In response, UNICEF has distributed 30 school tents,

and with the help of Army personnel,

are ensuring that students do not miss out on their studies.

And a hundred more tents are now on their way.

Meanwhile, child protection and health and nutrition specialists are on the ground

and are working with local government to ensure the needs of the survivors,

especially children, are met.
